چکیده

Emanation of radon ( 222 Rn) from granite countertops was measured using continuous and integrating radon monitors, and in air collected from encapsulated pieces of the countertops. A majority of the countertops emitted a measurable amount of radon. Although the granites contained the precursors, no thoron ( 220 Rn) emanation was detected. Gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to determine amounts of radium ( 222 Rn precursor) and other radionuclides in the granites. There was a correlation (r 2 =0.50) between the measured radon emanation and the radium content of the granites. Based on gamma-ray spectroscopy results, radon-emanation losses from the granite samples averaged 26% of the total radium concentrations. Although some granite countertops emitted substantial amounts of radon (range= <0.1 2.3 pCi/L), the contribution to indoor radon concentrations was estimated to average 0.6 pCi/L.

Differences of natural radioactivity and radon emanation fraction among constituent minerals of rock or soil.

We examined differences in the radioactive characteristics among the main minerals forming granite materials. Using a non-toxic high-density agent, minerals were separated from rock (granite-gneiss) and soil (weathered granite) samples. The natural radioactivity ((238)U and (226)Ra) and radon emanation fraction of the minerals were then studied by gamma-ray spectrometry. The radon emanation fra...

Predicted indoor radon concentrations from a Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000,000 granite countertop purchases.

Previous research examining radon exposure from granite countertops relied on using a limited number of exposure scenarios. We expanded upon this analysis and determined the probability that installing a granite countertop in a residential home would lead to a meaningful radon exposure by performing a Monte Carlo simulation to obtain a distribution of potential indoor radon concentrations attri...

Pre- and Post-market Measurements of Gamma Radiation and Radon Emanation from a Large Sample of Decorative Granites

Reports of radiation from granite counter tops generated public interest in the potential exposures to external gamma radiation and internal exposure from radon decay products created by building materials. The gamma radiation, radionuclide content and surface dose rates were measured in 322 slabs of 254 named stone types (area ~50 ft per slab) and 14 smaller samples (area ~1 ft). Average surfa...

Polymeric composite laminate to increase the performance of natural stones

Abstract Low mechanical resistance and high weight restrict use of natural stones in applications where tensile or flexural capacity is required together with a low weight, such as for long spans or thin sections (e.g., cladding, countertops, desktops). The use of composite laminates as external reinforcement both to increase the mechanical resistance and to decrease weight of natural stone is ...

Silica exposure during granite countertop fabrication.

Occupational exposure to crystalline silica has received renewed attention. The National Conference to Eliminate Silicosis in March 1997, was extensive. The conference included workshops that covered silica exposures and the risks in construction, the mining industry, quarries, and foundries.(1) The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) launched a special emphasis program in May ...
